Freezebox packaging
packaging, illustration, production
New winter, new Freezebox. Minnesota brewer, Bauhaus, called for a packaging design for their variety box, debuting 4 new beer cans. But, with a few specific needs for improvement. They are hand-packed, so clear differentiation between the cans was necessary & the design needed a fresh take on the existing brand.

CASE STUDY
Initial concept sketches
First steps were to sketch based off research. The box needed to be shoppable from all sides because every liquor store would be shelving them differently. To address this, I knew I wanted to have a rendering of the cans on every side.
Imagining Winterloper
One of my handful of moodboards proposed the idea of fantastical, bizarre creatures. The quirkiness was well received & I was given the go-ahead to breathe life into each of the brews. I began with Winterloper & the following are some of my sketches.
Elements converge
While the creatures were being drafted, two additional elements were introduced: the northern lights & star constellations. Early layouts explored this combination & helped inform color choices.
Companions
Now, it was about time Winterloper was granted some companions. The following are the winning sketches & some ideas that, unfortunately, didn’t make the cut.
Production
The 3 other creatures were finalized & the design was extended to the rest of the labels. Color was thoughtfully used to ensure packing the boxes more efficient than previous years.
Completed variety pack dieline
The box is extremely shoppable from all sides, knowing they end up on shelves in many different ways. The can renderings are repeated on the package to increase recognition.
…& VOILA!
Fun & functional beer cans packaging that embodies the spirit of the Freezebox, packed in an equally alluring box. They tell a strong color story, the parts are easy to distinguish & lessens the chance of error during packing. (Fun fact: Knight Fever’s creature was referenced after my husky, River!)
